Freedom of speech is one of the things that make this country such a wonderful place to live. We have people immigrating to our country every day to have the same right we consider to be a god given right. The media uses freedom of speech to report on things from local crimes to politics. Unfortunately, media can be biased and because of this, our opinions of things are colored by other people’s points of views. We tend to believe a lot of what we read when it is written in a professional tone.
Freedom of Speech: The Internet
With the invention of the internet we have seen a whole host of opinions varied on many different topics from religion to political affiliations. We are subjectto so many different points of views that if we read for five minutes, we can get twenty different opinions on the same topic. At this point it can be hard to sort out what our own opinion on a subject might be. You can find more factual information on government websites or websites that are driven by charity organizations. Science websites will also have factual material that is not colored by bias. This is not always the case, but science usually takes precedence over opinion.
The only way to keep our values and opinions intact, is to read the vast opinions out there as if they were a story rather than facts. Just because there is a professional looking article online about a particular topic does not mean that it is a factual article. Many people can write a professional article, the trick is, to notice when the subliminal opinions color our own opinions. Bias is everywhere, we can weed out the biased opinions by simply learning what to look for.
