The internet has opened the door to so many possibilities that were not even considered just fifteen years ago. We can shop from home, go to school from home and much more. The benefits of the internet have most assuredly become an essential aspect in nearly every situation. When you have children, the internet can be a danger as well. Possible dangers include internet bullying, introduction to mature content before the child is ready and even possible death.
The Dangers:
- Children maturing before their time. Simply going to school is a danger, a danger to your child’s innocence. The internet is a vast world of adult content and if your child gets a hold of a site that is too mature for their age, they can mature much faster than they are ready or you are ready for that matter.
- Child predators use the internet to scope out their prey. The predators look for those who are vulnerable. Those computers without parental safety controls are unlocked doors for predators looking to take advantage of your child.
- Loss of money is another issue. On some websites that you keep your credit card information, your child can accidentally charge your credit card. Many sites do not ask for a user name and password and those sites leave your finances unsecured.
Sometimes the internet can be a good thing for your child. The internet is a host to a lot of educational sites that turns education into fun and learning by way of fun inspires your child to learn more.
If you own a computer and you have a child in the home, utilizing the safety settings is a measure that must be taken. It can save your child’s innocence and maybe even their lives. Set the controls with a password that is easy for you to remember and only allow the sites that are educational or age appropriate.
